My 3 Most Useeful Study Materials - 2008/07/10 05:06 Fill in the blanks giving short reasons for your selection.

I believe that the two or three most useful materials [book, dvd, chess column, magazine, etc.] to study [fill in blank] are [list description] because [list reasons].

E.g I believe that the three most useful books to study how to analyze a chess position are:

1. Silman, HOW TO REASSESS YOUR CHESS, Exp 3rd ed.
2. Nimzowitsch, MY SYSTEM, 21st Century Ed.
3. Nimzowitsch, CHESS PRAXIS, 21st Century Ed.

My 3 Most Useeful Study Materials - 2008/07/11 08:28 Silman - Reasses Your Chess
De la Maza - Rapid Chess Development
Bookup Express 2000 - puzzles where you're not tipped off on what to look for. This more closely follows the challenges of seeing combinations in real OTB play.

My favorite chess history book is The Chess Queen - fascinating view of chess history and history in general as reflected on the chessboard.

I want to read Kasparov's new book How Chess Imitates Life (I think that's the name.) Anyone read it yet? Is it a better chess book than it is a business book or vice versa?

Thanks;
Andrea

My 3 Most Useeful Study Materials - 2008/07/18 21:34 I found Alexander Kotov's 'Think Like a Grandmaster' very insightful. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but it can offer valuable advice for club level players seeking to bring their game up to the next level.

I haven't got a copy of Kasparov's 'How Life Imitates Chess', but I've enjoyed what I've read of his 'My Great Predecessors’' so far.

Re:My 3 Most Useeful Study Materials - 2008/08/15 13:40 ok i have play like a grandmaster and it is unbelievable!!

But i would have to say the most beneficial things you can get to study would be

1. Chessbase magazine. It covers openings, in both video and games with analysis by GMs and knowing how to play new openings isn't a bad thing. Plus there are tactics, puzzles, games by GMs anotated and a review of what is happening in chess atm. It is released every 2 months which leaves the reader time to go through everything and learn. I actually wish i had gotten these magazines sooner as they are so helpful regardless of level.

2. Fritztrainer for your opening of choice or for an opening you wish to learn. Obvious really, just to improve your opening... It is a video to use with chessbase, i prefer video over a chess book however it is easier to learn when you play it yourself on a chess board and not on the pc.

3. Step by step books by cor van wijgerden, can't find a link to one, but these books are really helpful. They are puzzles and can range from mate to winning material to positional play. There are answer books too and they explain the moves played too. I would say if you are having trouble coming up with tactis then these books are a must.
