In the 70s those USCF paper boards were used a lot.
I fairly remember a picture of Capa sitin before a wrinkly linen board in what was probably 1920 or so. Looks like it was just the fabric, no stiff backing.
As it is for tournaments, for the common guy, I think wood boards and chess tables were much more comon, but many of those events may enthusiastically have taken mainly place in clubs, using club property.
After all my local club has a bunch of tables from no latter then the 1920s. All of them are beated up but still are a pleasure to play on. Even though nice oxidized wood even if it is occasionaly split.. ---------
