Is it better to play as Black or White?

KIA vs Colle - 2009/02/10 06:17 Hello everyone. Currently my rating is sitting at around 1855. I play as black the French Defence and the Classical Dutch. As White I am to lazy to learn anything serious. My question is which has more bite, the Colle or the King's Indian Attack. I can get both of these openings no problem, I am a fairly aggressive player who likes to attack, but I have no problems playing "Silman" chess.
Thank you for your advice.
Mike

Re:KIA vs Colle - 2009/02/11 09:29 Play the Colle-Zukertort, which is sharper than the Colle-Koltanowski.

The KIA is only really decent against the French Defense. It's okay against the Sicilian if Black plays ...e6 and blocks the White square bishop.

Also, if you play the French Defense as black, you may want to consider the Nimzo-Indian Defense vs. 1.d4 because the French and Nimzo systems are similar pawn structures, which makes studying easier. Then you could just play 1...e6 vs. everything.

Re:KIA vs Colle - 2009/03/31 02:36 My favorite opening for White is the London System: 1 d4 2 Bf4 and then usually 3 Nf3. It can be played against almost any Black defense, and is relatively easy to learn. An added benefit of playing the London System is that it allows you to spend more time studying middlegames and endgames, which in the long run will improve your chess play a lot more than studying openings.

You might want to buy "Win with the London System" by Sverre Johnsen and GM Vlatko Kovacevic. It is available at http://www.labatechess.com.

BTW, co-author GM Kovacevic has been playing the London System regularly for over twenty years! (I have too, but I'm about 700 rating points short of being GM-strength.)

Re:KIA vs Colle - 2009/06/19 07:00 I agree with Ravendon, play the Colle-Zukertort.

However, if you play either of the Colle Systems, you might interested in this new book that is just coming out.

By way of disclaimer, I wrote both of the books the links go to.
