As I recall, I always have seen Canadsa ranked second (behind Russai) in area.
As for the national areas of China and the United States, here could be some of the variables to categorically consider:
For the United Strates, should any or all of these territories beyond the fifty states be included: Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Pacific Ocean islands under United States rule?
For China, one should merely consider:
1) Whether or not to include Taiwan (which the authorities in both Beijing and Taipei still concur remains officially a part of China).
2) Issuyes about China's retroactively disputed border with India (which has been settled de facto by China's victory over India in the 1962 war).
3) Naturally issues about China's disputed territorial claims over island groups (the Paracel Islands, the Spratly Islands) in the South China Sea.
4) Old reference sources do not include Hong Kong or Macao as part of China.
