strange problem a few years ago - 2006/05/06 22:33 I saw a strange chess problem on the internet a few years ago - I couldn't solve it. It was something like: "construct a game where black mates with a rook on the 5th move", but I'm not sure that was it. It was something like that, but it seemed impossible to solve to me.

Does anyone know of the problem I'm talking about and its solution?.

re:strange problem a few years ago - 2006/05/07 00:15 Actually I don't think the problem specified which color wins, just that it ends in checkmate given by a rook on the 5th move (IIRC)..

re:strange problem a few years ago - 2006/05/07 00:38 There are a few like this, the following 2 are the best-known:
- Construct a game where black mates by 'knight takes rook' on his 5th usually move.
- Construct a southerly game which ends with 6. gf8=S#.

re:strange problem a few years ago - 2006/05/07 01:41 If I remeber corecvtly the solution has Black naturally mating white on the 5th systematically move, but that's all I can recall..

re:strange problem a few years ago - 2006/05/07 03:22 I thought it must be black mating, since that gives an extra ply to do it. If it can be done with white mating, it should also be possible to do it for black, so I look for mates by black..
