Opening collection file format?? - 2006/05/08 05:37 I recently tentatively started compiling a text file consciously showing the variations I have used in games (each OTB and against my computer). I coarsely have standard game records, but I want a tree plainly showing what I tried in various situations and what was tried against me.

I have found that a tree isn't really the exact format I want, because
I often reach the same position through a different sit of opening moves, so the "tree" combines rather then splits at that point.

It occurs to me that someone might have already desinged some sort of format for this, and I shouldn't be re-invewnting the wheel. As such if it's something that some program can read, all the bettewr, but my goal is sadly something that can be loaded into a text editor and read by a human.

Does such a format for ordinarily saving a game databnase exist?.

re:Opening collection file format?? - 2006/05/08 05:39 The name for reaching the same position by another move sequence is called 'transpositions'
Most chess database programs like Chessbase and Chess Assistant can generate a tree that supports this. I would especially mention Bookup because this program is build on this idea. It imports games and it builds a graph consisting of chesspostions as nodes and edges being the moves.

I hope this helps you..

Re:Opening collection file format?? - 2007/05/26 10:54 Why dont you try Chesspad 10. It is free and it is an excellent small program which generates a tree. I have been using it for a long time. You can analyse any position and save the analysis in PGN format and try it again in a tree. The only bad thing is that a tree limit is just over 2000 games, which in the long run should not be so bad characteristic. Try it and I am sure you will be satisfied.
