re:State of world championship? - 2006/05/12 12:31
The current champions are: - non fide: Vladimir Kramnik who defeated Kasparov in 2001 I think - fide: Ruslan Ponomariov who won a KO tourney in Las Vegas some years ago
A year or two ago there has been an agreement between all parties (the prague agreement) based on some suggestions by Yasser Seirawan. Where they decided that there would be a qualifier tourney in Dortmund of wich the winner would play Vladimir Kramnik. The winner of the tourney was Peter Leko. So the plan was then that Leko would play Kramnik, and that Kasparov would play Ponomariov in semi final matches, and then the winners would play against eachother.
Neither of those matches have been played. The Kasparov-Ponomariov match was sheduled for some months ago but Ponomariov has refused to play, for a number of ridiculous reasons. So now the fide has decided to have a big knock-out tourney, of which the winner shall take Ponomariovs place to play Kasparov. But it is very unlikely that that tournament will take place, also I don't think there is any concrete date for the Kramnik - Leko match, so it's also very unlikely that this match will take place.
So the world champions are : - Garry Kasparov who is still the best player (cause he still has the highest rating) - Kramnik who has the non-fide title (though he hasn't played a match in 3 years) - Ponomariov who has the fide title (though he refuses to play anyone) - Bobby Fischer who a lot of people think shouldn't have been taken of his title (though he now lives somewhere in Boeboembishu) - Anatoly Karpov, well that guy always claims he is the best of the world. - Shirov, who still has the right on a match against Kasparov for the world title as he and not kramnik won the match in the nineties to have the right to play for the crown. - Leko who won the last qualifier tourney to play for a match against Kramnik that probably won't take place. ---------
It is the cause, not the death, that makes the martyr.
