Suggestions of software to improve ones chess. - 2006/05/17 13:57
Has anyone any views as to what is the best software to improve ones chess? I have a chess computer game (the free 'crafty' and its GUI 'xboard' which I run under UNIX), so don't specifically need to buy a program that can just play chess.
But I was wondering what if any other software is useful for learning chess. There seems to be n-million bits of software, that say they will improve your game - chessmaster, chessmentor, fritz ... but are any of them really much use? I've downloaded the demo of chessmentor, but don't know how it compares with other software.
Cleary one could spend loads of money on software.
I'm particulary keen to know about any free software that runs under UNIX. I hate Windoze, but somehow it looks like 99% of software runs under that.
To give you some idea of my rating, its about 1450 on the Internet Chess Club. I've given up using the free server FICS, as the admins seem to allow too much bad language etc on there.
Is there much point of having software to manage databases of PGN files?
If you have any suggestions, and have some commerical involvement with the software (or any other chess-related software), would you please state it. I'd still like to know your comments.. ---------
There are two ways of exerting one's strength: one is pushing down, the other is pulling up.
