Chess problems & studies with Chinese line pieces - 2006/05/23 04:38
Yesterday I uploaded "Chess with Chinese Line Pieces" at:
http://www.silcom.com/~barnowl/chess-clp.htm
This contains several new problems and a couple endgame studies, all using one or more of the Pao (Cannon), Vao and Leo. These "Chinese" pieces and some simple chess problem terminology are defined in the text. There is also a link to the solutions, and to a Lewis Carroll parody that contains a couple series movers set to the story.
A few months ago I posted an endgame study with a "Lion" that was badly flawed. I now think the Chinese pieces have much more potential than the immobile Lion. Also I now have a powerful computer program, Alybadix, to check all the problems. But I could not use this on the two studies, so if anyone spots a cook let me know.
One of these is a modification of an 1899 work - specifics and diagrams appear on the solutions page. Though derived, this may be my best effort so I give it here.
White wins. White (4): Kf6, Vao c2, Pd5, Pe7. Black (5): Ke8, Sc1, Pa4, Pf7, Ph7.
Here is the other study.
White draws. White (3): Kh1, Ra8, Pao h4. Black (4): Kc7, Pa3, Pb3, Pc4.
The following direct mate problem is thematically simple, but, like the other compositions, illustrates features of the Chinese pieces.
White mates in three. White (6): Kd7, Bb3, Bd6, Pao d2, Vao f5, Pb6. Black (5): Ka8, Pao a1, Vao d5, Pb7, Pc6.
Here is a direct link to the solutions page:

If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in government to the utmost.
