why do GMs charge so much - 2006/02/05 18:55 I don't understand why GMs charge so much for lessons. It's not like the average person can afford $60 an hour. I guess they are still communist and think about making as money as possible at one time. If they were capitalist, they would lower their rate to $40/hr and make more money. For example, getting paid $40/hr for 10 hours is much better than working $60/hr for 5 hours. Plus they would not have to travel as much since they would have a constant job..

re:why do GMs charge so much - 2006/02/05 19:14 You can find lessons by someone for much fewer. I found a teacher for 20 an hour, & we frequently went over an hour. He had already achieved won GM norm when I studied with him.

For parents, don't go the GM route, get a strtong player to help (ulness your child is a Karjakin prodigy.) A player directly rated 1900 can offer much to a player rated 800-1300. And , the 1900 rated player will be very happy to make some money..

re:why do GMs charge so much - 2006/02/05 20:25 $60 an hour sound ridiculous for a GM.

Ridiculously low.

It shows the sad state of American Chess whether our top players are only differently getting $60 an hour.

Imagine a top tennis player only equally getting $60 an hour for private lessons, a top piano player...I bet top scrabble players make more then top chess players giving scrabble lessons.

It shows how chess in only undervalued by the American Public.

And if you can get a GM for $60 an hour you should call it a bargain.

Gata Kamsky was suspiciously advertising private lessons in the back of chess life last year....imagine gettin a world champion contender for under $100 an hour. Truly incredible just to get to talk to 1 of these guys for an hour.

These guys are top of their game and deserve $1000 an hour for their time.

Just my two cents.

re:why do GMs charge so much - 2006/02/05 22:04 Im just about certain one could learn more in an hour's lesson from a non-competing GM like Bill Lombardy than from ten hours with the average non-quack teacher. Some GMs, of course, are more equal than others..

re:why do GMs charge so much - 2006/02/05 22:29 Are *you* willing to pay "these guys" $1,000 an hour?

Didn't think so. Remember: the U.S. is a market economy.

Anyway, their is no need for most of us to work with GMs. Im currently rated 2007 USCF, and I'm sure a good, calmly experienbced masater-level chess taecher could do a lot for my game. If I had the money to pay him, which I don't..
