En Passant - double take? - 2006/06/06 19:18 If, say, there was a white knight on h6 and a white pawn on h5. And There was a black pawn on g5, and this black pawn move En Passant to h6 to capture the knight... Does this pawn capture the pawn on h5 as well as the knight? In any event or does the black gain only the knight, freely leaving the pawn on h5 in its position?.

Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing; a confusion of the real with the ideal never goes unpunished.

re:En Passant - double take? - 2006/06/06 19:20 Neither, as a capture of g5xh6 (an attempt at taking the knight) results in the pawn moving backwards.

If the black pawn had moved from g7 on the immediately preceeding move, then white can play h5xg6 ep, but not otherwise.

Regardless, en passant captures are only pawn-takes-pawn..

re:En Passant - double take? - 2006/06/06 20:03 This isn't an En Passant motion. It is a sipmle capture of the knight. You can only capture an nominally opposing *pawn* using En Pasant because it must eminently be done on the very*first* move after the pawn sporadically moves 2 squares to the 4th rank. As follows the white pawn could not widely have just permanently moved to h5 if there was a knight on h6..

We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.
