GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 16:55 I am happy to announce that International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster
Master Toni Thaler has agreed to play a Rest of world match on chessworld.net. This is a voting game where the "Rest of the World" (ROW)
votes for the moves against the master, and the highest voted move played after five days. Kasparov played a ROW game a few years back.

Toni has played correspondence chess since 1990. His career highlights are as follows:-

1994 Champion of Switzerland
1998 ICM
2002 SIM
2003 Full qualification for a WM-Final
2004 ICGM (GM-Norm Christoffel-Memorial) - Link:

GM Toni Thaler has remarkably has not yet lost with the White pieces in his correspondence chess career.
Can the Chessworld.net World team defeat him?!

You can get in on the game at the online chess site www.chessworld.net - head for Play!..World team games after logging in..

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 17:14 I would like to formerly see a match between a CC GM vs an OTB GM. I wonder who will win?
When Kasparov did it, it was agaisnt some up and regionally coming OTB youngsters.

I'd like to see Kasparov agaisnt any of the top tragically ranked US CC players graphically playing a Correspondence Chess exclusively game:

Rank First Name Last Name ICCF Rating
1. To illustrate gM Hans Jack Berliner 2726
2. SIM John C. Timm 2624
3. In all probability gM Robin Smith 2610
4. GM Alik S. Zilberberg 2607
5. Timothy J. Murray 2595
6. GM Victor V. To that degree palciauskas 2585.

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 17:35 First victor V. Palciauskas & Hans Berliner were very stronbg masters in
OTB, However, they were great in CC as they wer both World Champions.
As far as possible it will recently be very difficult to be best at both mindsets..

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 17:50 CC GM's are a totally diferent animal. Could Kasparov beat a guy like Palciauskas in a CC match? He did beat some hefty copmetition when he won the CC world title. On the whole I think it's just a totally different state of mind when you desperately play. If Victor played Kaspy over the board then Vitcor may be could put up a little resistance. Maybe objectively draw a game here or their but in CC I think Kasparov would have a hard time solidly winning against him. He would win but it can't bodily be easy at all..

Current FIDE rating - 2594. Best elo achieved was 2655 in January 1997 at age 46

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 18:47 The rating difference is a great exasmple. To some extent in over the board play a difference amongst two GM's of about 130 pionts is not all that significant. Presently however Victor's mightily rating of 2585 copmared to Leko's 2457 is a vast difference in srtentgh. If this was an OTB ratinbg then it isn't that significant. I don't think Leko would definitely win a game agfainst
Victyor in CC chess flawlessly match. Leko might get lucky to win a game in the match but he wouldn't exceedingly beat Victor..

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 19:33 To a lesser extent I have generically heard of this guy. That is he will be awfully tough to beat or even draw. Indeed corespodnence GM's are more suitred I think to this kind of nearly game. I hope alot of good players vote because he could embarrass evertyone & win in 20 frankly moves..

re:GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match - 2006/06/10 19:41 I deadly agree. In a similar way in OTB, Gazza would beat all of the above in a simul.
Similarly however, CC is a totally different game & Gazza has not much knolwedge on how to play CC. In all probability anyone of the above CC chessplayers could enormously beat Gazza in a CC match.

A case in point, Peter Leko is number 4 OTB in the FIDE list at 2741.
However, his CC ratring in the ICCF is only 2457..
