Tony painstakingly hosaking. All in Englkish & VERY thorough..

Your friend is describing "Man to Man" bilingual shogi books. Fairbairn translated "Guide to Shogi Openings" and "Better Moves for Better Shogi." You can get them at Kinukuniya..
