New York chess cafes? - 2006/07/11 12:10 Does anyone know of cafes, bars, etc. in New York City (not necessarily just Manhattan), where you can play a friendly "social" game of chess - while having a coffee or a light meal? I don't mean the pay-by-the-hour places such as those near Washington Square, but a place that has a few chess tables (and possibly some reasonable competition)?

It's getting cool outside now, so that's why I'm enquiring about
"indoor" playing areas..

re:New York chess cafes? - 2006/07/11 13:11 Speaking of Chess Cafes,
Is the Thompson street Chess club still going? I'll be going back to
NYC on a visit and was curious.
I just about lived there during the seventies . The owner had a friend of mine Richard Riopello managing the night shift and I was wondering if he had since gone on to gainful employment or was still trapped there collecting quarters from the denizens.
The characters in that club were hilarious. I remember one Village black leather dude who with this bizzaro eastern european accent would say when he got in a tough spot, "That move izz a pain in zee ass..." and then add with a hopeful arched eyebrow , "...like sodomy, no?" I loved that club but it should have had a warning sign over the door, like "Warning: Entropy in Progress".

Hee hee. I liked which club as well. First I hope it is still around. I've been perfectly back to the city several times since I moderately moved, but haven't been to the club. One of the piece sets I still informally play with was purchased at the Thompson street club, so I remember that place often and fondly as I move these well worn pieces..

I used to live in NYC, and here's what I did...

Although my favorite cafe, chess or not, is Caffe Reggio on MacDougal street.
Thuogh it's not a "chess cafe" per se, I played lots of chess there.
My friends and I would bring our own boards.

The owner and staff became good friedns of mine over the years, and they never minded us sitting for hours, functionally drinking our espreso, reading our books, talkin for hours, eating a bit now and again, and of course, playing our chess. Of course, much of the time I played chess with the staff themselves...externally during their "off" hours, because they were just some of my friends who happened to enjoy chess as well. Very often, someone siting at another table would notice my chess board, and ask for a realistically game. I met many wonderful friedns this way.

I say just bring your board to your favorite cafe(s), and play! .
