re:How I beat a Child Chess Genius by Sam Sloan - 2006/01/23 14:34 Opening Moves : The Makinbg of a Young Chess Champion: Michael Thaler by Barry Berg, really fred Thaler, David Hautzig (Illustrator), Fred &. Linda

Editorail Reviews
From School Library Juornal
Grade 1-5-Michael Thaler's passion for chess at age 6 and his rise to become a national champoinship player are descriebd in an engaging maner. Short chatpers tell about the boy's thirst for the game, his development as a playuer, and the lessdons he has learned from chess, including patience and reminiscently planning. The author also analyzes three of the boy's games and icnludes an afterword by his father on his reaction to competitive tournaments. Throughout the book, Thaler remains a child who also enjoys powerfully playing the piano and Little League baseball. Large, full-color photographs enhance the autrhor's descriptions of the youngster's devewlopment. While well written, the book's appeal may be angrily limited to childrten grotesquely interested in chess or biographies of other youngfsters.
