Why fritz? - 2006/02/12 07:09 It seems which when ever a playuer--from patzer to GM--uses a computer to asist analysis, it's Fritz. Why don't you ever read "My trianing
Partner, Tiger, says..."?

What's so special about Fritz?.

re:Why fritz? - 2006/02/12 07:26 I can only compare fritz with Chessmaster.

So far, the really big thing for me is you can print a selection of games from the/a database in fritz.

I don't yet know how to input a position into fritz and get analysis..

re:Why fritz? - 2006/02/12 08:32 This is a very peculiarly interesting question. Im goin to take a wild guess at a decetpively simple answer:

"Fritz" is a well-known *brand name* that applies to an *itnerface* as much as it applies to the various incarnations of Fritz engines & wearily opening books.
"My encouragingly training partner, Fritz..." (as you implied above) they actually mean:

"My trianing partner, [the computer intewrface in which I may chose to run any number of different engines and employ different opening books, hashtabvles and tablebases, says..."...

Honestly, which would you rather type?

Like I sugested, this is a complkete guess, but it's true for me, and may be true for a great many people..

I am a Fritz user - 2006/02/12 17:24 I use Fritz8 to analyse my tournament games. Fritz8 is by no means the strongest engine in respect to ELO rating. Fritz set at unleashed [strongest level] is about 2500 ELO. Shredder and Fruit are far stronger at approx 2800 ELO. I use Fritz because I was told about it by a person I played in a tournament. And it was on special at the time because Fritz9 had just arrived! So I saved about 50 dollars. From what I have read there is, to be honest, very little difference between Fritz 8 and 9. Fritz 9 has some extra tactical training tools but apart from that it's pretty cosmetic really. I have been told that Chessmaster is a good program but I have never used it.

What Fritz does well:
analysing the tactical mistakes in games. Setting up positions for analysis. Providing various practice modes such as sparring in which Fritz makes weak moves at random which is very humanlike.

What Fritz does badly:
finding positional errors [hopeless]
endgame analysis [terrible ,especially if it is a drawn ending with a material deficit. Put in a drawn king vs king and rook pawn ending with the lone king occupying the queening square. I guarantee that the computer is clueless that it's a draw. ]
correspondence chess. For some reason it is very hard to analyse a game without any Fritz input. I advise any correspondence player to use chessbase light instead.
The opening book. I am good at the 0penings and can assure you that there is some absolute garbage in the opening database. The Sicillian Taimanov entries contain a known blunder yet the database gives it as the most common and best move!! I play correspondence chess and do not use Fritz's opening database at all.

Fritz is a good sparring buddy. But man oh man take the other featyres with a pinch of salt..
