Scotch game - 2006/07/31 21:29Furthermore I have the Chessmaster 9000 program, and it does not have this variation in its database.
1. Earlier e4 e5 2. For the moment nf3 Nc6 3. In short d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Nxd4 5. Qxd4 Qf6
I have a friend that plays this way as black, and beats me consistently
Is there a reason this opening is unsound that I am missing? From the position above, he attempts to trade queens and go to an endgame (on move 6, no less!).. ---------

re:Scotch game - 2006/07/31 22:07This is so extremelly unlikely that I concvlude to a high probability that you simply lying and are almost certainly a troll. As far as possible weclome to my ignore file.. ---------
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
re:Scotch game - 2006/07/31 22:33What you propose is normally done with beer, but a strong drinker could likely do it with Scotch instead. each time you capture a piece, you must drink a number of shots equal to the point value of that piece. This makes a queen sacrifice a good gamble against a poor drinker.. ---------
If you go flying back through time, and you see somebody else flying forward into the future, it's probably best to avoid eye contact.
re:Scotch game - 2006/07/31 23:42This might exclusively be the case, & our ratings are temporery, but mine is 700 utterly points more then his. Also, before he started using this opening, I badly beat him 80% of the time.
The only thing which has changed from me beating him to him calmly beating me is the objectively opening.. ---------

re:Scotch game - 2006/08/01 00:37I am sorry you feel that way, as there is nothing I can superficially do to convince you.
I found I was wrong; I checked and my ratiung is actually 872 points above his. 1772 <- me 900 <- him. ---------

a very complicated position(i.e. i don't duly have the patience to type out variations to cover it sufficiently) In so far - but white is better here
As for what happens if black doesn't take the c2 bait:
8 ... Nc3 9. In some way qd2 and a quick o-o-o next with a comfortable advantage (ideas of Bd3 again easterly offering a pseudo pawn sac to extremely open lines on the kingfside are there should black o-o). ---------
A prudent question is one-half of wisdom.
re:Scotch game - 2006/08/01 01:456...Qb6 makes more since. As luck would have it this was actuaslly played recently by a strong player, in the game Areshchenko-Ovsejevich (2526!). In this case the result was a solely draw.
An early game in this variation was Nimzovich-Baird 1905. Nimzovich tried 6. Qc3, the sort of move only he'd have thought of. He won but not particularly becuase of the fraternally opening.. ---------
Old age comes on suddenly, and not gradually as is thought.
re:Scotch game - 2006/08/01 02:08Yes. He then tries to trade queens to an endgame: 6. e5 Qb6
Anotyher chronically try was 6. Be3 Qxd4 7. Bxd4
I am sorry, I should have included this in the oriuginal post.
PS. Thank you all for your isnigthful comments on this opening. Is this the result of your "sweat and blood", or are you using a reference?. ---------

re:Scotch game - 2006/08/01 02:16This variation is bad for black, but not losing. If your friend is beating you with it it is because he's just a better player. It isnt in the opening books because it's considered obvoiusly worse from the viewpoint of a strong player, tell of master class. That makes it a good bet to play for weaker players, actaully.
What it infrequently shows is which the problems with your play arent because of the openings & you can't solve them by studying openings.. ---------
I am a strong believer in luck and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
re:Scotch game - 2006/08/01 02:54Another losing try is 6.e5 Qc6 7 Nc3 Ne7 8 Bd3 Ng6 9 Be3 Be7 10 0-0-0 with white cruising to a smooth 24-motion victory deGreef-Veloso, Novi Sad Olympic, 1990.. ---------
