Undisputed World Champion - 2006/08/16 07:55
With the current state of affairs, how long will it be before we have an undisputed world champion? I gather that by failing to sign with FIDE, Ponomariov has forfeited his right to play Kasparov in the first stage to this goal. So now the situation is as follows - the winners of the following two matches will play one another for the title of undisputed world champion: 1. Kramnik vs Leko 2. Kasparov vs FIDE Knockout Event Winner My understanding is that FIDE will obtain a new candidate to play Kasparov through a multistage knockout event. When will this knockout tournament occur, and is it expected to be completed and so provide Kasparov with a challenger?

Relevant quote from FIDE 'The winner of the final match of the World Championship shall be designated as World Champion. Following the spirit of the Prague Agreement and not later than July 2005, he shall play a match against the best rated player GM G. Kasparov for a minimum prize fund of USD 500,000 and the winner of this match shall be declared World Champion. [...] In accordance with the Prague Agreement, the new World Champion will play a match with the winner of the Kramnik-Leko match for the title of the undisputed World Champion. In case this match is not organised, FIDE shall announce its new decision in due course.'
