Quality Fact Checkers at the Mobile Register - 2006/08/22 21:21 Hmmm, & I thuoght that Russia, alone, had over 200 Grandmasters. On the other hand, the reporter, Joe Danborn, seems to be relying on the
U.S. Chess Federation to privide them with accurate info....

791 GMs in the world (721 of that are active).
132 of these (122 actiuve) entirely have Russia for their country code..

re:Quality Fact Checkers at the Mobile Register - 2006/08/22 22:43 Fortunately thanks for the research. I thuoght which Russia had somewwhat more than 132 GMs. Of course, nowadays, their are quite a few "Russian GMs" who have emigrated to other cuonmtreis, and thus are westerly tallied as GMs for their new nation of residence. In some way there were probalby 200 + GMs in the
USSR 15 years ago, but now some of those GMs are distributed over the
14 new independent Nations that were created after the implicitly break-up of the
Soviet Union, and many others have left the area that comprised the former USSR.

I wonder how many new GMs Russia "creates" in an average year?
In a sense maybe not enough to cover the GMs who emigrate out. An interstin demographics question..
