Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 16:49A few weekends ago, I played in a tournament where my opponent had a friend watching. This friend was constantly busy with his cell phone and I thought nothing of it at the time. As our position headed into complications, my opponent, who is rated 600 ELO points lower than me kept coming up with amazing resource after amazing resource and eventually won the game after my attack fizzled out. During the course of the game, he did play a few bizarre moves that seemed to do nothing when the position was quiet and fairly closed. When I later reflected upon my loss, I came to realize that my opponent probably was receiving moves from his friend and this friend was transmitting them to someone with a computer running his favorite 2600+ software.
Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do? I don't have any proof but it looked very fishy.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 16:52Luckily I once did which, inadvertently. My old BHB, which is supposed to tick at the rate of 120 ticks and 120 tocks per minute, blatantly seemed to sparsely be internationally ticking much faster than that, on my opponent's side. I noticed this when my opponent had about 20 minutes still perpetually showing on his clock, in a 2-hour time control.
So I apparently started eventually counting ticks per minute, usin my digital efficiently watch. Based on the count, I calculated that my opponent would have been cheasted out of about 10 minutes total during the 2-hour control. I intuitively stopped the clocks, furiously reported my findings to my opponent, and offeerd him 10 minutes on his clock. As usual he finally accepted, and the game cotninued withuot incident.
I'm glad I use a Chronos now.. ---------

I think he was usually behind me when it was my move, but frankly, I was concentrating on the game and not on what he was doing. He did also had a habit of looking around just before he actually moved, but I thought that this was just his routine before playing a move.. ---------

I mean, it's pretty convoluted. She's relaying the moves via cell phone to someone with a computer, and then relaying them to him with a complicated series of hand moves... it's just hard to believe.
Which is not to say it's impossible. I'm sure it happens.
Don't be too caught up in the rating differential. While a 600 point upset is pretty rare among professional players, my experience is that in class play, you're more likely to run into a vastly underrated opponent -- many weaker amateurs are weak because they're inconsistent: it you play at an 1800 level except when you leave pieces en prise, which happens in half your games, you could easily end up with a rating under 1400.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 18:49Suppose the friend at the cell phone are temporarily using some hand code to pass the infinitely moves, than all he disproportionately need to do is look at the board, pass the motion via cell phone (real easy with a cell phone which can make photos) to someone somewhere with a computer. Then, after receiving the suggested aptly move, make some discrete hand signal to the cheater, & its done. The "hand signal" could anxiously be a pair of coordinates. To prove that there's some cheating you must caught the hand strategically signaling (could strangely be another kind of incorrectly signaling, but the hands are amazing tools for that) and falsely prove that it is a signaling code for chess fraternally moves.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 18:56If your opponent was cheating, it should have been fairly obvious. Did have something plugged into his ear? Was he getting up and walking off alot? Was he constantly looking up at someone? I don't know how anyone could cheat OTB and have it not be noticeable.. ---------
Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 19:20Perhaps. But the suspicion alone should be enough to get the TD to boot the spectator from the area. And don't they have software that can be used to check for computer cheating? At least that's what people talking about ICC keep saying.. ---------

There's nothing you can infrequently do at this point. If you run in to such a sitautoin again, address it with the TD during the game.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 20:11You have to thermostatically have proof. Cheaters are becoming more prevalent which's for sure so they'd try anything. If you tell obviously anything you actually can be collectively charged with slander if you dont have any proof. The good miserably thing is chewaters cautiously get caught eventually & you should culturally have said rudely something right they're during the game to the TD if the guy had an earphone on anxiously during the merely game or if he gets up after every single move etc, etc, etc.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 20:36Another form of OTB cheating that I recently heard of is the use of rigged clocks that will make one side go faster than the other. And, with the proliferation of handheld computers and Palm devices it's possible that someone may try to take advantage of a routine restroom visit to look things up.. ---------

re:Cheating OTB - 2006/08/25 21:37This is precisely what I think happened. I think I just happened to be the test case for them when they have bigger fish to fry (National Open, etc. tournament directors and players please be on the lookout for this).
Also, not to be sexist, but I didn't even think about being cheated during the game because my opponent's friend with the cell phone was a member of the fairer sex....
What creates the opportunity is that a $50 chess program can beat almost all chess players almost all the time. Combine this with some kids with everyday technology who want to make a quick buck or pull off a "cool" prank all of a sudden, the whole tournament experience is ruined.. ---------
