Chess Piece Design - 2007/01/25 20:39
Whilst appreciating Staunton as the best genre for actual playing, it's kinda constraining for design. The knight is the main piece that designers like to indulge their artistic talents. I read this interesting blog entry on Chess Piece Design which kinda makes the point well, design since the days of Staunton being the predominant design is constrained, but the knight allows for some embellishment of the staunton style. There are other pieces that are great too, but more subtle than the knight - even the pawn can be excellent in many sets with superb proportion. The rook has a design that can easily be rather course, and conversley, show the set to excellence if done well. Then what about the theme chess sets? These chess pieces are somewhat different huh? What's the point? Gifts mainly and quite magnificent as gifts. They say something about the thinking nature of the recipient - no china doll for this household, a historical chess set says 'discerning, historical, intelligent', even if it becomes a significant dust collector..
