Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 00:18 I started a new topic, about the same hot things, hopefully of interest for most of us, let's look at the games of the World Champ. together! In te meantime, a stronger pair plays somewhere else in the same country: Rybka vs. Zappa! They play a 10 games match.
Please post news, questions and answers related and use "private messages" for personal or cross-messaging. TU!
For the games download or live go to "chessok.com"
The PGN downloads have analyses by Rybka sticked to the critical moments, perhaps "moderated" by GM Shipov!

Let's start with game 1 Zappa-Rybka:
A sharp Ruy Lopez variation, introduced by the K-K matches. Rybka gets out alive from a heart-attack attack and exchanges queens with a pawn up. White is still attacking with a rook and 3 minor pieces. Zappa declines a 3-fold repetition and keeps on trying, a risky decision against such opponent, unless it saw a "ghost mate". With Capablanca' simplicity and precision Rybka exchanges a couple of "her" pieces and zappa is doomed to defend a R+B+p against R+N+2p. The long bishop and its collaboration with the rook are helpful in such cases... and the draw is achieved.

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 00:43 And now round 7. I came to bet late and in the 7 minutes left did not succeed to put my money in although, theoretically I was only "2 clicks away"
Svidler-Aronian is already drawn in 20 (so I saved 10€)
It was a Ruy Lopez Exchange, without much fuzz. At move 17. White plays a dubious new move (if anything) playing for a win was only possible with 17.g4
After succeeding 17...f5 Black gets a proper compensation for his "pawn down" (the doubled pawn on q-side) The bishop on c6 is now active and an imminent minority attack by Black on the k-side will force further simplifications.

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 01:02 What happens in Anand-Grischuk?
Just a few minutes ago I had a resentment as I could not bet on Grischuk (due to 1/11 rate) The poition ( also out of a Ruy Lopez) was quite balanced at move 30, but instead 30...h5! Black choose 30...g5 which looks like suicide. Rybka now accounts for +2 so I saved another 10€!

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 01:19 Kramnik-Gelfand just ended in a draw as expected, after quite dramatic fight. Good psychology by Gelfand playing his opponent favourite - Botwinnik variation!
Kramnik had to sac one of HIS pawns (that's life... and some bloody variations too). I couldn't watch the game (error in server) but I gathered there were just small ups and downs (unlike Fritz, Rybka is very stingy with evaluation on material in dynamic positions) If the game had highly critical moments, I'll come back.

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 03:11 Nearly romantic chess. Morozevich remembered "whois" against Leko. Instead of the safest 7.g3 he does 7.Bc4 Leko takes the glove and answers in kind 7...Ne5. In other games of this Scotch Morozevich chose 8.Be2 as 8.Bb3 is quite rysky. But now he is in for it! Such variation are normally played by lower rated and/or in correspondence. Possibly a little surprised Leko doesn't take the pawn (which Rybka doesn't like it either, 9...Qxe4) At move 11 Rybka prefers 11.Qd2 by a small edge. If you find other things in the commented files which you download, please consider that the 2 "ladies" are not the same! Mine runs on 32bits and on a much slower computer. You should credit the difference with at least 100 Elo against "her". You might ask what's the reason for 12.Ba4+ instead of thre natural (and probably better) 12.Nd2. Morozevich doesn't like Black to castle long. After 12.Ba4+ c6 13.Nd2, 13...O-O-O is not so appetising for Black. Little by little Black makes his position solid and holds a slight advantage. If Leko wins, I would have won 24€ on the unsucceeded bet, otherwise I save 30!
Morozevich avoids exchanging queens but will have to do so in much worse conditions. In the meantime Anand actually won his winning game and takes distance , he's on top by a whole point! And Leko lost his advantage by a small imprecision. Not much time left on both and now again, anything can happen. Leko has lost a pawn, but his king is safer. In time pressure, this is more than compensation. Rybka gives, 0.00 Where is such precision come from? Perhaps she anticipates a perpetual. Both have the draw insured but both play for a win! Morozevic is left with less than 3 minutes! ...1 minute against 5 now! Equal pawns, but I don't think this has any importance in this Q+N endgame. 12". 0" What is it? Draw, it was a display error on server. Now the clock gives 1' and something to each.

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 17:28 b2, hi!
Thanks for taking part and for the links.
That game is another story, old-standard 7...O-O.
BTW why nobody plays the Schlechter line 7...Bb6, e.g, 8.Nf5 Bxe3 9.Nxe3 Nf6 10.Nc3 O-O 11.Be2 Re8 12.f3 d6 13.O-O Be6 14.Qd2 a6!? 15.Rad1 Qb8! 16.Ned5 Bxd5 17.Nxd5 Nxd5 18.Qxd5 Re5 19.Qd2 Qa7+ 20.Kh1 Qc5=)?

I found 2 games of "Moro" with 8.Be2, against:
Balashov (St Petersburg 1993, 1-0 in 26) and
Kramnik (Dortmund 2001, which was += when they agreed to draw)
In Mexico he tried 8.Bb3 against Svidler without getting anything out of the opening. An imprecision at move 13. was kindly returned by Svidler (moves 13... and 14...) followed by a mistake (move 19...) and more... until "Moro" won. I would not advice him to repeat the variation. Leko just prepared a sharper line and most of the game was =+. So, the answer to your question is NO. The fact that Leko, who has little experience with the Scotch, chose it on purpose would say the same.
8.Be2 seems to give a "clear +=" and the question goes back to 7...Ne5. If funny moves like 7...d5?! or 7...b6!? are playable, it will justify my preference for the sound 7.g3.

Comming back to round 7 Kramnik-Gelfand, it seems that the result of the opening (Semi-Slav, Botvinnik, Moskow variation) was good for White. Kramnik could have played better at move 16. (e5!) 17. and 19. Later a small advantage has changed hands a couple of times.
Kramnik, as usual, seems to play a match not a tournament. This attitude (oversafe, less incisive) can bring +1 or +2, but Vishy has already raised the lath. Maybe I'm wrong, we still have another half tournament to come, where tirednes and/or cross results can change a lot. Kramnik still has an ace up his sleeve (White against Anand). Why do I insist so much on Kramnik?
Well he's the one who beat Kasparov!

moros scotch - 2007/09/21 19:06 Good! but the game against Balashov is also him. There are many Russians in chessgames team, I wonder why that spelling has escaped them. Probably for that very thing, as the Russian phonetic translation is very difficult (especially to English) In French or Spanish they would write "Morosevich" or even "Marósevich" (~ "Frostson" or "Frostwindson") which probably is the right pronounciation. Check the participants to St. Petersburg (zt) 1993 and you'll see. He changed the moves against Kramnik as the former game has a hole (which a computer could spot in 2001) I think 19...Qg5!
About "Spelling of Russians names" you may see either

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 20:40 Second Game Rybka-Zappa
Most classical Chigorin variation in Ruy Lopez.
Ruy Lopez da Segura is the full name and "segura" means "safe" or "sure". Let's see how safe it is for Zappa! Relatively long book line (19 moves) and some stupid pawn loss by zappa (or given for a ghost initiative, that's too much for me to understand).
Rybka is now a clean pawn up, but 4 against 3 on the same side + 2B each should be draw. Zappa rejects a bishop exchange (which I wouldn't) and now Rybka plays for mate! It looks close to target, although I don't see it yet. But Rybka makes miracles, now a backward pawn converts into a passed pawn, which will win the game I'm sure. rybka confirms with +2.5
Some checks, the white king has to go far, +3, +3,7 poor me every move adds a fraction even if the whole variation is forced. I would care about stalemate but Rybka doesn't. Programs never forget first principles. The last black pawn falls, yet another ghost initiative, Rybka is selfevaluating at +5.
Rybka changes her mind in a clear variation, why? I think just to look more misterious! Again back? If it's a 3-fold I'll die in shame. I see it's a 10-period triagulation (unnecessary) but the win should be "perfect" (maximum advantage in her language)

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 21:26 Hi, in the meantime zappa gave up (just when Rybka summed up to +299.92 = mate in 7)
I was in time to close my bets for round 8.
Not much to bet on, Why Grischuk with Black against Leko has more chance to win than Svidler with White against Kramnik? I,ve done the most stupid of my life Svidler-Kramnik 1-0 (2 stakes due to misclick) rate 1/9.5 and Leko-Grischuk which shouldn't be that bad at 1/3.6 draws pay very badly - even worse than they should!

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 22:06 No one wants to come here with me LIVE sort of!
At the moment White is a little bit better all over.
Most of all Rybka likes Aronian's position against Moro.
Gelfand-Anand Black will play ...c5 and then what? I don't think Gelfand did the best at move 11. I found only one game with 10...Bd6 and W (Speelman) played 11.Bg5. I like 11.Re1
Right now rybka began to like Kramnik's pozition although I think White has a strong threat in .f3, .g4. What idea has Black, as W king is too solid on q-side?
Just not get mated!

"I'm better, I don't see how you win" (Romanian chess jargon)

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/21 22:29 Kramnik doesn't care and allows f3 which will be certainly followed by g4. Rybka comes to terms and settles for +0.00. The worst of all is that Kramnik spent 1 hour for this 5.Nc3 variation in his beloved "Petrov", meaning he does not feel comfortable.
And is still thinking, can he go to f5 and accept the pawn sac? Finally he goes to a4 (no other choices)
As the "horizon" goes on, Rybka adss small bits to her evaluation +0.07, of course she likes White. Not muc has been changed on other boards. Gelfand played Rybka's foresight and she gave him another .13 for "good boy" (+0.63)

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/22 00:39 I came over again to Rybka-Zappa and foretell you between 7-3 and 8-2 for the whole match, judging by the ability to escape difficult situations and the precision to convert minimal advantages.
Let's start with the opening: 15...Rfe8 is very old fashioned, why not 15...Nc6 as 16.b3 is not so good now for: 16...Nxd4 17.Nxd4 exd4 18.Qxd4 d5!=+ Rybka's novelty at move 20 is quite impressive as 20.Nd5 h6 21.Bb1 Nh7! with the idea 22...Ng5 killing the most important attacker of e5 and controller of d4. Rybka's move takes advantage of the precarious position of Bd7 (after .Rd2). Nobody would understand the pathetic 22...Ne7 although Rybka and Fritz also think it's best! only to change the evaluation after one move to higher than the "result" of other defences. Only Shredder comes up with ...b4 which can be a lesser evil. The stronger the computer the more materialistic the program! 23.Nxe7 ( my own Rybka, by far, prefers 23.Nxf6+. Another pathetic move in the, now, pawn down endgame is 33...h6 (I like 33...Bf6). Perhaps Zappa "understands" better, "he" avoids exchanging rooks until the position simplifies into 4 vs. 3 same flank with 2B each which should be a draw. Here is where the difficulties for most programs are comming in. You might think the endgame is easier to calculate and the program (as compared with a human, will perform even better. Do you remember how Anand won a pawn endgame because (I think) Fritz exchanged the queens in a dead draw Q ending, the only thing he shouldn't do. The endgame has such concepts like opposition, domination, zugzwang and so on. On the top of it you must "understand" the endgame and know... many endgames. How many times I saved endgames against the machine, tempting it with another p. Instead of a lost endgame with a p down I got theoretical draws ... 2p down. Of course all things have to be "long term". Here we are: 46...g5? New problems but still a draw. Move 57 avoiding the exchange of bsB. I'd rather stop here, in endgame knowledge, Zappa is at beginner level.

Re:Mexico 2007 -a new pair comes in! - 2007/09/22 01:31 Kramnik already drew so my main bet is lost. I still have Leko with advantage against Grischuk. Rybka says +1 better than nothing.
Gelfand also drew. Uninspired handling of the opening.
Aronian-Morozevich Rybka says +3.44 where it might be a theoretical draw! It's what I wrote above about a program endgame knowledge +4.59, as GM Weingold says "better draw" for Aronian. Moro acts like an artist, gives up the second pawn (I think in this position he could defend it, no zugzwang). Anyway, the endgame is draw, with or without the e pawn.
