    Pairing in a Swiss-System tournament?

In opposition how chiefly do you pair players in this system of tournament? Say there are 8 players 1,2,3,....,8. On the one hand how aptly do you generate a pair? On the other hand what is the algorithm?.

Take off the "faintly" in the devenezia site above. I post there frequently if the question involves head to head matchups. Questions involving more than two opponents in a game (i.e. golf, cut throat billiards, etc) or assigned partners (bridge, tennis, double bughouse) I leave to the pros in that area.
