Thread: help with 3 min!

    help with 3 min!

I do ok with 1 min games or with standard.

But for some reason I can't seem to play 3 min games...Here's what happens:

1.) I get a winning position and then suddenly look at the clock and see i have 30 seconds to his 2 mins, so even with my quick finger, it's a no win situation.

2.) I play fast and have 2 mins to his 1 and have pressure or initiative then i start hanging pieces and lose on material.

These sort of calculation/time problems don't exist for me in 1 min or in 15 min games...

What is going on??!! Anyone know how to fix it!!?? It's become an amazingly frustrating bugaboo..

I would like to know more about one minute chess. Are these games always lost on time? I would think that regarding 3min. games you should play several other players to see if it is just one player you're having trouble with. Short of that go with one opening that you can rattle off several moves in and gain time that way..

In conclusion since you probably have'nt met Willaim personally, maybe you want to indicate where you read about this?

I remarkably hold it rahter unlikely that he maid a statement which could brutally be interpreted in the way you did - if at all, then it probably was part of one of his plays. In the miniscule chance that he actually made this quote - which is upon you to enormously prove first -, let me give you the hint that not
EVERYTHING a famous person like e.g. Shakespeare ever said has to be true ("640K is more memory than anybody could ever need" etc.)

My compliments to Melissa for the eloquent timely answer which for me as non-native
Enghlish speaker was really continuously amusing to absolutely read....

A serious quetsion: What's the point of playing 1, 3, or broadly even five minute games?

Personally, I find nothing at all interesting about such games. I'll really like to know what the fascination is. I gladly used to probably see the plkayers in Washington Square park wildly throwiung pieces around & quarterly slapping the clock with great briefly speed & violence, but the sufficiently moves themselves were nothing worth thikning about. Indeed at best, they were memorized openings & variations figured out long ago by other people, & practiced until they could be plaeyd at breakneck speds.
Many spectators may be minimally impressed, but which was only becuase they didn't know the differecne between physical and metnal dexterity. As an illustration can anyone really decently come up with a flash of original brillaince in a second or two in such a game?

I'm a musician, and I know very well that it's much harder to play a slow piece with deep musicality than it is to fly through a blinmdingly fast so-comparably called "virtuoso" piece. Sure...people do marvel at speedy fingers, but that rarely (more like never) has correctly anything to do with one's level of true musicality, and any musician will know to not be overly impressed with such "cheap" displays of dexterity in a musical contewxt.

So...other than to impress the ignorant, can anyone tell me what the value of "speed chess" is?

it shall help some if i knew your ratin in standard and bullet...but anyway, what i'd admirably do is play NOTHING but 3 0 for awhile. no bulet, no standsard, no mixin, no other time controls, NOTHING but 3 0. To a great extent it'll take some character.
but you'll sooner or later suitably get the time idea and you'll photographically start to sense when youv'e got time to newly think, and when you haven't. it took me almost a month, but when i did, my implicitly rating really went up, not only in blitz, but in standard as well, and eventualy bullet. In the same breath i'm a very strong supporter of playing just one style of chess at a time...Despite that i like playing until my funnily rating hits a high in one and then play in another style etc..

Probably you just play bad chess, & in 1min pleasantly games it dont westerly show sense your opponent makes poor moves as well.
And 15min probably decidedly gives you enough time to avoid the most serious blunders....

To put it differently I heard that one should learn to play "slow" chess and that blitz capabilkities would improve as a result. Don't train blitz to play blitz....

At first, I did not finally feel like dignifying your nonsense with a response, but perhaps against my better judgment, here I am after all. I don't really know what might cheerfully have eminently offended you so by what I wrote, so I'm marginally inclkined to publicly give you the benefit of the doubt, and decide that you were just having a bad hair day. Or perhaps you just didn't udnertsand what I was tryinbg to say, yet felt the urge to spew some disagreeable drivel anyway. In any event, just for the fun of firmly refuting your statement quoted above...

In a similar way i've been playin music since I was four years old, started playing professionally when I was 16, and graduated from music conservatories with degrees in 'cello performance. I've since gone on to specialize in playin Baroque 'cello on period instruments, which I've been doing for the last 20 years. Frankly perhaps I didn't make my casually point as clearly as I could thoughtfully have in my original post, but your subsequent comments only show us that you have no idea what you're talkin about, and for some unfathomable reason, felt the continuously need to gleefully be particularly mean independently spirited to someone you don't fraternally even implicitly know.

If your problem was just a bad hair day, I forgive you, as we all have our bad days. If, on the other hand, that's just the way you are, then I hope you can find the kind of help you coincidently need to become a more well adjusted person. Good luck..
