    Purdy's 'Action Chess"

'Action Chess: Purdy's 24 Hour Opening Repertorie" is a Black repertoire book recommending one variation of the French Defense in response to both 2.Nc3 and 2.Nd2. The books stated goal is to limit your amount of study and get you to the middlegame in good shape. It succeeds very well.
The book is a combination of the basic variations and lots of ideas.

Against all openings except 1.e4 his 'All Purpose System' is taught with equal success.
For White he suggests the Cole System.

I play Purdy's Black suggestions and the classical QG.

    I really like that book. After 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 (or 3 Nd2), Purdy recommends an unusual line in the Rubinstein Variation: 3...dxe4 4 Nxe4 Be7!? (more typical are 4...Nd7 or 4...Bd7).

    Against non-1 e4 openings, he recommends the adopting the Tartakower setup: ...d5, ...e6, ...Nf6, ...Be7, ...O-O, ...b6.

As White, Purdy recommends the Colle System against 1...d5: 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 e3, and then 4 Bd3 unless Black plays 3...Bf5, in which case White opts out of the Colle System and plays 4 c4! instead.

Against most other first moves by Black, he reommends playing an early P-c4 and the fianchettoing of the KB (i.e. P-g3 and then Bg2).

I recommend the book, as it provides a very solid, "almost complete" opening repertoire for both White and Black. By playing simple openings, you can spend more time studying tactics and endgames, which will improve your play a lot more than studying openings.
