Merits/Demerits of 'always open with PAWN to K4'

    Hi All,
As a beginner...I have been advised:
    1] ALWAYS OPEN WITH P-K4 !!!

    because,

a] As it says in a beginners' chess guide," to the beginner the choice of an OPENING MOVE IS A COMPLETE MYSTERY...HE HAS NO PRECEPT OR MAXIM TO GO BY, HE HAS NO THEORY TO RELY ON...AND THEREFORE, IT HELPS HIM ENORMOUSLY TO NARROW DOWN THE CHOICE TO A SINGLE MOVE...THAT OF 1] PAWN TO K4."

Now,I must admit...that in the 4 games at Chesscircle, that I have played WHITE so far...my 'batting average'..has been quite good...and this OPENING MOVE-[P-K4]..does instil confidence !

Would be informative to know how others learnt their first move as White!!! And, which is their favourite Opening move as White...and reasons for it ???

    Incidently,

Am now 'reading up'..the merits and demerits of my NEXT PROPOSED OPENING THAT OF [P-Q4]...where...one chess book states..SUCH A MOVE MEANS...ONE IS THEN,"PLAYING FOR COMPLICATIONS"....

Would love to hear your views...
    tks

Ah the Good Ol' Days Some one still knows Descriptive Notation!!! You are showing you age my friend, as *everyone* now uses ALGEBRAIC Notation. (Instead of 1 P-K4 P-K4 it is now 1.e4 e5).
