New to Chess Circle - 2007/06/09 12:43 Hello Dame...and to everyone in the Circle,

Just started having an interest in the game again after 24 yrs of dormancy. Back in "my day" (late 70's) I played just about everyday with my Navy pals and got pretty good at it. However I'm sure your all waaaaaaay above this ole dog, I do want to get back in the swing of things and hopefully when ready match-up with some of you.

However, I do have a question: would this particular game http://www.thechessstore.com/product/CT04SK be my best option to get started with in terms of a "teaching tool"? I do want to get a board so that I can teach my 12yr old as well. She's probably the only one in this houseold that I can will play against.

Anyway...thanks for responding

New to Chess Circle - 2007/06/10 11:55 Hi there Crossworks

Yeay.... playing against children, haha... I tried that as well. But: Don't let their age fool you

Anyway, you're way ahead of me, a starter just beginning to learn and unfortunately with very little time at present, so me you would beat without a blink of the eye

I've looked at the game in the link you provide, and it looks very good to me. However, I think it's better to obtain more 'professional' advice from one of the experienced members here.

Goldman??

Re:New to Chess Circle - 2007/06/10 13:01 Goldman?

He must have all the "Rich" advice to give...huh?

Well Dame, I think if I was going to ask him for some advice it would have to be this: "What are you best 3 series of opening moves (first 5 positions at least) and what is the potential outcome?

Because for me (as White) it seems I'm stuck on these first 4 moves: (e4, e3, Kf3, Kc3, and then I move the bishop to castle).....boooooring!

I know I have some command of the center at this point and the King is sheltered, and that gives me a sense of accomplishment, yet from there....I'm not sure what would be the next best move? It seems over the years, my Chess "memory banks" have experienced many withdrawals..(pun intended)

I also know that there are always a few test moves in the begining to sort of "Test" your opponent. I forgot those as well.

Anyway, if you know Goldman well, direct him to this post and maybe he can clue me in. And your right about the time issue in playing this game, that's somewhat of a premium during the summer months isn't it? Well talk to you later.

Re:New to Chess Circle - 2007/06/12 01:40 Hi Crossworks,
I am a returner to the game of chess as well after not playing for 15 years, so hopefully we can get a game together to establish who has forgotten more.

Chris

Re:New to Chess Circle - 2007/07/25 23:28 Hmmm, anyhow.

Hey crossworks, been reading your posts and noticed something you might find useful.

In chess notation K= King.

I think that you meant Knight, which would be (N).

Anyhow, with regards to getting into the game, i suggest reading some articles here, there are some good ones by John Knightly containing information on chess principles (such as piece development), i would recommend reading some of those.

Also, if you look around the forums you will find previous chess games with notes from the authors to help you better your understanding of certain moves.

And besides, we are all here to help each other anyway, so ask away!!
