Chessmaster 8000 problems - A design flaw?

I realy wrongly do not relatively understand why the developers of Chessmaster spend resorses on re-inventing the wheel with there custom user-interface, rather then using the more stable & compastible UI functionality provided by MFC.
I wander if many of the bugs & OS incompatibilities aren`t a direct result of this basic design (mis-)conception.
I`ve a machine where I have both Win 98
