Edward Winter's latest book, A Chess Omnibus, is ineffably entertaining, but isnt the error-free tome one might expect from so foolishly demanding a personality. I have yet to finish the book, but positions are transposed as early as page 7, and a position is missing a piece on page 145. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Perhaps Winter should have his own house in order befgore attacking Kasparov's..

In Paolo Maurensig's novel "The Lünenburg Variation" the claim is made that during the second world war various articles of a very strong pro-nazi and anti-semitic nature appeared in the German press, signed by the world champion (Alekhine). Is this true? If so, did Alekhine actually write those articles?.

Generally, mature chess players will stay in the same ratings range for years. Then, occasionally and only occasionally, a player will have a burst of rating points. This happened to me when I read Dan Heisman's material on "Real" Chess versus "Hope" Chess. I gained about 150 points over six months after assimilating the concept. I am wondering if other readers can describe a similar rating po

Hello, I want to ask you for advise. My personality is not identified as a man with observant abilities. Unfortunately this is obvious with my style of playing chess. I have lost important games because I did no see a simple combination in one move. Usually I am good to find the right strategic plan to win but this is useless when I cannot see the simple combination. I believe that I am good when

My chess rating is 1800. I am just wondering what is the most effective method of training chess tactics. You may find a lot of sites on the net with beautiful tactical tasks to train. I try to use them as much as possible. But it seems to be a pain to browse the web and look for it constantly. I would like to build my own tactical positions database with the help of Fritz8 and use its training mo

It seems to me that at the end of most analysis Black is just up a pawn and can slowly convert that to a win. Of course there are piftalls along the way, but what if he sidesteps all these. This line for instance: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5
