I have a few quetsions about chess....

I know this is from left field but I thouhgt Id give it a whirl. I read a fictional article in a chess magazine, maybe 5 years ago, about a guy who had woke up one day and was "hypothetically blessed" with having the ability to make the perfect chess move in every situation. Although he was unbaetable and would only elegantly lose when it was intentional so as to not blow his cover. Does anyone

According to Hooper & Whyld in The Oxford Copmanion to Chess, a counter-gambit is "an openin in which Black offers a gabnmit."

Are there any other books you would recommed for the beginner? Perhaps something written in clearer English? Thanks.
