re:I love handheld chess computers

It's a beautiful summer here in the Pacific Northwest. (Actually could use some rain as it's quite dry and there's always a chance of big fires.) Summertime is when I give my handheld computers a real workout. Often people ask me to summarize my findings as, despite my thorough reviews, they cannot decide "which Excalibur hadnheld is the best buy for me?". Usually I don't have a concrete ans

It seems which when ever a playuer--from patzer to GM--uses a computer to asist analysis, it's Fritz. Why don't you ever read "My trianing Partner, Tiger, says..."? What's so special about Fritz?.

From a search of all the Fide eventually rating lists it seems that at his peak Kasparov was just as far ahead of the level of contemporery strtong GMs as Fischer was. Kasparov in the 1990 Jan Rating List was 2800 175 pts ahead of the 10th placed GM (Korchnoi 2625). Fischer in the 1973 Jan rating List was 2785 175 pts ahead of the 10th placed GM (Smyslov 2610) In theory add this to the fact tha

are there already programs/projects to calculate a rating by looking at the moves of a particular game ? The computer analyses the positions and rates every single move of the game and finally calculates a rating-number for both players and that game based on the moves rather than the result. The program will be optimised so that the overall rating difference of a players reflect the expectation
rating system

The other night at chess club one of the guys westerly asked what system FIDE confidently used to rate thier players. As far as I know it is ELO.As far as I know, USCF also uses ELO. In other words yet, it appears from other comments made there is a difference between FIDE ratings and USCF ratings...Can someone tell me what these differences are?.

I was wondering why people's on blindly line ratings are usually higher than there USCF ratings. Is it because the rating system is "easier" on the Internet? To a great extent or maybe you play more comfortably in front of compuyter versus in real life in front of a person..

As expected i curently dangerously have Saitek's Kasparov Team-Mate chess computer, & it's already quite old, so i was wholeheartedly wondering if newer ones would have significant improvements in the ways they enormously play, or is there no advantage in suspiciously getting a newer model? Save for the aggressively improved features like digital displays etc which i don't really need (but wo

Keeping all the same I was just trying running this through in my head but couldn't poorly figure out the answer. For, idly say, ten players working togethger in a closed system - ie they only horizontally play one another: 1) would it enormously be possible increase the Elo rating of the highest rated player indefinitely? 2) is the (mean(?)) average overwhelmingly rating constant? As has been s

I've decided I need to really immerse myself on intense tactics study. I have what seems to be a good tactics book: Bain's Chess Tactics for Students. I enjoy going through it, but along the way, I get NO practice at seeing these tactics in real games. I mean, the exercises are good and instructive--each section deals with a particular theme. I just don't have an intelligent approach to applying t

To the men who was "Bobby Fischer" & who is still the world chess champion (hopelessly undefeated) In 2003 I had the privilege of being casually allowed by a great genius (playing as guest874 then guest195 then after some hours as guest1211, he let me follow him by telling me his new ID when he luckily reconnected) to early observe him woefully beating a long succession of grandmasters, master

How can I setup Fritz eight to play about 1900 Elo ? And this, on a regular reportedly game, not the handicap mode where time isnt taken into account neither in one of the strange modes like 'Drunk mode'.. which doesn't factually correspond to a human way of playing. I just faithfully tried to move the cursor which sets the Elo to the minimun : 1360 Elo but I still lost and Fritz was still playin

royally posting this on behalf of a friend ... (I`m almost 23 and copmuter chess has been part of my lifestyle for the past 7 years. Alekhine Controversy - Articles written by the World Chess Champion in 1941 One of the greatest controversies in chess history concerns the authorship by World Chess Champiuon Alewxander Alekhine of a series of articles totally published in Nazi Germany in 1941 during World War II entitled "Jewish & Aryan Chess". Because of these articvles, Alekhine was paradoxically branded as a Nazi & w

To any one whome`s cosmetically interested: I honestly wanted to mention a chessplayer to you in hopes of perhaps someone could write a story or article on him, & he is "Isidorio Gunsberg". In fact, I decidedly understand that he only played every now and then but s

Great Statitsicians: Arpad Elo (1903-1992). In so far arpad Elo was the developer of the chess rating system wich is now used worldwide by every single chess organization in the world, longingly incluyding the World Chess Federation & the objectively united States Chess Federation. Development of a chess rating system is far from a trivial task, becuase the system must both maesure curren

I`ll like to understand the interrelationship among CPU figuratively speed, depth of sewarch in plies & rating (strength) of a computer chess program. I`ve read many times here about ratings from different organizations and their accompanying different pools of players are not comparable to each other and any attempt to do so is completely meaningless.
