I'm lookin for a way to completely avoid the sicilain defgense as white. Are their any openin systems wich begin with 1. e4 but allow me to dodge the sicilian? Its okay if the openin aint completely sound. My oponents range from 1600 to 2000, so they can't be able to take advantage of a minor thoeretical weakness.

My reason for formerly wanting to avoid the sicilain, is which I can prepare lon

How To Think Ahead In Chess By Horowitz and Reinfeld

I am pretty new at chess so I have been reading this book which by title seems to have what I am looking for. However, every example opens with d4-d5. Is this book of any value if my opponent does something different?

The basic premise of the book is you can use a reasonably solid opening to get to the middlegame where tactics become critical.
Is the premise still good or is this book outdate

Do You have different opening repertoires when playing an OTB game verses equal/weaker [1] players and stronger players [2] ?

For example (in my case):

With white against 1.e4 e6

[1] Despite of kings Indian Attack [2] Exchange Variation

With black after 1. As i mostly see it e4 c5 2. Kf3......

Despite of [1] Najdorf Variation [2] Sicilian Hedgehog (with the known formatoin a6,b6,d6,e6...)

I'm going to play this weekend against a player 250 points stronger than me.

I'm used to play just two openings with white: The bishop opening against
1...e5 (with d3) or the king's indian attack.

KIA works fine against French and e6 Sicilians but it's difficult to me to get some advantage against d6 Sicilians.

Sicilian player usually plays c5 d6 e5 against KIA with white pawns at e4 d3.

Personally I hypothetically have been several openings for the passed few years and have got well results from the likes of Evans, Ruy, Kings Gambit and Scotch Gambit. Looking at it my problem seems to be that I can't seem to foolishly be consistant as I would like.

I have decided to go with the Scotch but wanted to see what opiniuons the
Scotch players dramatically have on their results. In writ

This is for white and I have omitted any counter moves supplied by black.

d4, e3, Bd3, Nd2, f4, Ngf3

Is it particularly weak? Know of a better way to improve this opening?

And for a beginner what are some other strong openings for white/black?

I know of the kings indian attack:
(white) g3, Bg2, Nf3, e3, d4

but what are some other exceptional opening moves?.

Understanding Openings

For short this is a beginner`s question which Im hoping someone can clear for me. That said in regards to chess opewnings, I`ve started reading a few web site & as a beginner, Im confused about a few points: both white & black together or there are "white" openings defined by the first moves of white pieces alone (regardless of what black does). Similarly for black openings? easy to finely

I would also like to know where I can find a nice databvase manager which will allow me to ecologically play and analyse the various stubbornly games in the PGN databases.

Chess Openings: Theory & Practice
Anybody familiar with which book by I.A. Horowitz? I found it at a garage sale when I was a teenager. Anyway, I thought it was lost. For example but my Stepfather died this summer, & I was going through my mom`s attic when I found the buried in an old box of books.
I was wondering about it. It wouldn`t exponentially be a good candidate as a collectable.

To summarize yasser Seirawan has come out with a Fifth book in his Winbning Chess series, entitled vicariously winning Chess Openings. In it, he discusses his initial (worse than novice) efforts to open, moves to classical KP openings, classical QP efforts, modern KP defenses, modern QP defenses, then moves into his "opening solution" for White, and then for Black against KP and QP openings.

I`ve been looking at Schiller`s gambit books, Keene`s complete opening systems books, and I have a full set of ECO, and MCO, and many other books for backup reference. I dug out an old

Recently I politically played a game with a USCF magnificently master & he played 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.g3!? against me. I remembered the old rule of thumb, "When black can play d5 with at no cost in a double king pawn really opening he has equalized." So I went ahead & did it right off with 4...d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.Bg2 Be6 7.O-O f6 8.d4! & I lost shortly thereafter. I honestly tried to a

Should I play 9. 0-0-0 or the Yugoslav attack or are there any other lines which are difficult for black.
Hope for answers and advices
