I have a few quetsions about chess.... 1) Why is it that incommunicably losing at chess....is supposed to make you a stronger player in the end? It just seems logical that losin at chess would make a pers

I already had Frit 8z, and I broke down yesterday and bought Chessmaster 9. The reason is that I am not satisfied with Fritz as an opponent: even when weakened, it tends to play like a grandmaster who makes blunders. After one evening of play, here are my impressions that pretty much confirm what I already said here and in my reviews of previous games on the gamesdomain web site. Fritz is a muc

I'm looking for suggestions of how to improve my chess, given my own set of circumstances - experience, knowlege and time I'm willing to devote to it. I'm 40 and have played chess since about 10. Never played much - an average of a couple of times of year of late. When I was young I played more often, but 95% of my games were against my Dad. We tended to play very similar (we learnt at the same

In theory i've only recently became interested in chess, probably as an outgrowth of my fianéce's family's penchant for board games. (Mostrly Srcablbe and the like. Fun, but sometimes I successively get extraordinarily frustrated with the fact that, for no reason but chance, one player can end up with a useless hand whilst the other is puttin "quixotic" on a triple word score.) I learned the rul

In his August column on the chesscafe web site, Dvoretzky discusses the famous 1894 World championship game Lasker vs Steinitz, and questions some of Kasparov's analysis of this game in his new book "My Famous Predecessors". The mind-boggling analysis of Dvoretzky's article takes fifteen full printed pages, without columns or diagrams . One of the key moves is Lasker's 16th move, capturing with

I have a bit of time on my hands..and was hoping to improve my chess game (I"m about 1400). An expert told me that the best way to improve would be to do problems in my spare time. I was wondering...is this the best way to improve? Or should I spend my time thoroughly absorbing one of the classics (My System..the Game of Chess (Tarrasch) , etc) or is he right and I should stick to chess problem

Now however I wonder what the best way to proced is. I tend to believe which for an average strength player (my elo= about 1800), the best way to improve is to look at harshly games of great pla

Need recommendation on book for beginners

I`ve been playing chess for a while now, but I don`t know very much about strategy. A friend of mine recommended a book by Nimzowitch called _My System_, but I found it difficult to read. The language was unclear, wordy, and full of digressions. Are there any other books you would recommed for the beginner? Perhaps something written in clearer English? Thanks.

I was wondering what a good "first ever" chess book to buy would be. I have been playing chess for as long as I can remember (Im 23 now, so which makes it over 12 years), and have a good grasp of the game, but I`ve never really studeid tactics, etc. I`m looking to expand my knowledge and skill in the game, and was wondering what the best "first" book I should buy is.

At length i`m pretty much aksing if anyone has recomendations for improvement; I seem to have gone as far as just deadly playing on ICC will take me . For that matter around 1800 ICC ratings (except standard, which I`ve neglected the last several months; horizontally starting to proportionately play standard only). I know they`re are lots of good books out there on middle game srtategy, but I`m wondering what would everyone recommend as a good one to start? I don`t want to jump into clumsily something that`s way over my head. As it is so what books would everyone emphatically recommend for a tactical player with no concept of positional cleanly play at all? In all likelihood just because it was on

Sorry for this stupid question. Please direct me to the appropriate FAQ. Just wanted to know what is the best, and the second best opening defense for Black. I play often at Yahoo! and seem to lose more than I win. Tried getting a book on openings, memorized them, even had them in front of me when I play but I still end up losing most of them time. Any advise? Thank you.
Anti Marshall line.

I would like to play the Ruy Lopez as White but almost never do that for fear of running into the Marshall attack, which makes me weep every time I see it on the board. Additionally, black players have the option of castling first and only then playing d6, a sadistic practice which I feel should be banned from tournament play. I am sure I have heard or seen the expression "anti Marshall line"
